A NOTE FROM YOUR CAMP COUNSELOR:
Dear Campers (& Visitors),
I can tell my mind has been spending too much time in the future lately, because I haven’t been breathing very well. Inhales tight, exhales short. The future, I think, is a lot like space. It’s just on the other side of our (atmosp)here, but the air is thin and we aren’t meant to live there. If we don’t have something to pull us back, we could float out in that dark unknown forever, watching the world pass by from an impassable distance, observer instead of participant.
While assembling activities for Camp, I’ve been thinking about the big but simple movements, the loud and wholehearted noises, we used to make– jumping and spinning and whooping and running with our arms spread wide open. How these small, physical gestures feel so foreign to our adult bodies but familiar to our still young spirits. How taking up space in that way– unselfconscious and maybe even a little inconsiderate– can act like a tether to the kind of freedom that plants us, not just in the present, but back into ourselves.
This week, let’s stretch our arms and our boundaries. Let’s free our wildest parts and liberate our curiosity. Let’s be big in our imaginations and in our play.
A NOTE FROM YOUR OTHER FAVORITE CAMP COUNSELOR:
Hi Campers! ItsmeBuckwheat.
Welcome to my very special part of camp and, what I’m pretty sure will be, your favorite part– Weekly Wonder Walks! I’ve been on a lot of walks in my life. I’m pretty much an expert. And one of my favorite parts is all the fun things you can find when you’re walking. For example, sticks. Also, street snacks. And squirrel friends! The Outside is filled with wonders! And, unfortunately, cats.
Each week, I’m going to take you on a walk where we will hunt for treasure (and avoid cats). You can use this time as a simple noticing walk or a photo scavenger hunt. You can keep track of your findings in your head (if you have any extra space up there) or bring a handy notebook. Since we will be searching for nature things, you might find this plant and bird identifier app to be very handy.
THIS WEEK’S AWE-SOME ACTIVITIES & CHALLENGES:
(click on each image to enlarge)
Paper Airplane Derby: If you need ideas or instructions, this fold n’ fly guide has an entire database of paper airplane designs to choose from. Who knew!
Ice Cream Invention: You can use your imagination to design your flavor, but I personally think it’s more fun (and hopefully more delicious) to go full mad scientist and make it! You can grab a pre-made ice cream for your base or, if you want to start from scratch, you can use this no-churn recipe or this dairy-free nice cream recipe and then add your toppings in. *Full disclosure- I haven’t tried either recipe, yet.
Knots: If you google ‘knot tying workshop’ the internet will take you to some pretty weird places. Thankfully, it will also suggest websites like this one, which will teach how you to tie knots (and tie ties) with simple animated videos.
THIS WEEK’S AWE-MAZING EVENTS:
Shonda Rhimes: My Year Of Saying Yes To Everything
Catherine Price: Why Having Fun Is The Secret To A Healthier Life
Lori Gottlieb: How to Identify What You Enjoy

Enjoyed this one - it's been a long time since I've jumped into the pool and let out a whoop. :) WHY?? :)
I love this so much. My astrology-inspired theme for August is Play and this camp totally fits the bill. I love how creativity can be silly and playful. I can’t wait to eat some ice cream!
